Differences Between AE and EY Endings

Abstract et Concrete Nouns

    The ending used is sometimes a sign of a significant difference:
  • the abstract noun, even if it is a feminine noun, always ends with -ae.

  • the concrete noun ends with -ey.

la saletae       abstract: refers to the dirtiness

la saletey       concrete: refers to dirt, rubbish

Noun and Past Participle

  • Noun:
    il ont eû une maodite échaodey   (They had such a mishap)

  • Past participle:
    il sont échaodae   (they got their fingers burnt)
